United Nations Lifts Restrictions on President of Syria Before White House Visit

United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his White House visit the coming week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state subsequent to commanding a rebel offensive that ousted Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, bringing to a close thirteen long years of internal conflict.

America's diplomat to the UN Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a new era" following Assad's ouster.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions while commanding the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with the terrorist network. The US removed HTS from a list of foreign terror groups during July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of these restrictions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks to Washington and to friendly nations for their support the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday occurs subsequent to US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.

Following their discussion, Trump said Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity at pulling it together".

The pair met on their first occasion during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the Middle East.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country until he severed ties back in 2016.

Previous US Visit

Monday's visit will not be his initial visit to the US in the current year. During September, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to speak before the UN General Assembly in Manhattan in almost 60 years.

During his address, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position within the global community" and demonstrated unity with the people of Gaza.
