Kristi Noem Visits Portland Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility Alongside MAGA Influencers

Kristi Noem, who holds the position of the DHS secretary, inspected the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland on a recent weekday. During her visit, she witnessed a small demonstration outside, which differs significantly to the fiery "encirclement" claimed by former President Donald Trump.

Accompanied by MAGA Personalities

Noem was accompanied by a group of right-wing figures who were whisked from the airport to the site in her security detail. Her department has shared increasingly belligerent online posts showing federal officers conducting raids and firing crowd control measures at crowds.

Protest Scene

Officers established a perimeter outside the ICE office in the southern Portland area before the Noem's arrival. A small group protesters, featuring one wearing a costume of a bird and another as a baby shark, were kept at a distance.

A song blared from a gathering spot close by, with words about Donald Trump and controversial documents. Someone yelled to a government videographer filming from the facility's roof, challenging whether the DHS had been dubbed the "propaganda department".

Reporting Details

Members of the press from mainstream media organizations were also held behind the security perimeter outside, while the conservative personalities in her party—the conservative trio—shared social media updates of the governor participating in federal agents in prayer inside, delivering a motivational speech, and instructing a member of the state guard to "Get ready".

Recent Rulings

Noem has previously echoed the Trump's assertions that the handful of protesters—who have rallied in their dozens outside the ICE facility since recent months, including one in an frog outfit—are "terrorists" who have placed the office "under siege", making the use of federal troops critical.

Yet, on last weekend, a U.S. judge in Portland halted the former president's effort to bring under federal control Oregon’s National Guard, stating that the his allegations that the largely peaceful city was "burning to the ground" were "untethered to the facts".

The next day, the same judge, the magistrate—who was selected to the bench by Donald Trump—broadened the ruling to block state militia from any jurisdiction from being sent in Portland. This occurred after Trump responded to her previous decision by seeking to use members of the California National Guard to the state.

Increased Confrontations

Since the former president highlighted the limited yet ongoing demonstration outside the office and made unsubstantiated allegations that Portland is "in a state of war", a growing number of his adherents, including conservative personalities, have appeared to challenge the individuals.

Several of these encounters have caused altercations and fistfights, prompting apprehensions by the Portland police. Nick Sortor was one of those detained after he tried to force his way a gathering on a pavement near the site and was engaged in a fight over an national banner. The influencer had before seized the banner from a demonstrator who was setting it on fire.

Criminal counts against the influencer were later dropped after an outcry in right-wing outlets prompted the chief of the civil rights division of the DOJ, the division head, to threaten an investigation of the Portland Police Bureau over supposed political bias.

Female protesters he was involved in an altercation with still have pending accusations.

Official Responses

On Sunday, the state's governor, she, accused government personnel in the site of trying to irritate the protesters by using disproportionate amounts of tear gas in a residential neighborhood and inviting right-wing personalities to film the gathering from the top of the building. "They are clearly trying to antagonize the crowds," the governor stated.

Several of those MAGA-aligned figures were mentioned in a law enforcement document last month as "opposing demonstrators" who "repeatedly come back and antagonize the protesters until they are attacked or pepper sprayed" and refuse "frequent warnings from law enforcement to avoid" the group.

Influencer Activities

One influencer, a ex-reporter who changed careers as a Christian nationalist influencer after being let go from his previous employer for content theft, shared a clip of Noem observing from the upper level of the site at the small group of individuals below, including an individual who wears a chicken costume to mock Trump. The influencer described the video of her observing the calm environment below: "DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stares down army of Antifa and a guy in a chicken suit".

Regardless of the contrast between the claims from Trump and Noem that this ICE field office is "under siege" from "homegrown extremists" and visible proof of a handful of demonstrators in peaceful clothing, the figures with Noem continued to describe the group as threatening extremists.

Meeting with Police Chief

During her visit, the secretary also met with the city's top cop, the chief, who has been portrayed as "woke" in conservative media for allowing his officers to apprehend Sortor. In a social media update on the meeting, Johnson claimed that the police head had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

Her security detail then left the facility past a handful of protesters on the nearby road, including one wearing a bear wearing a hat.
